Hurricane Prep for Carpet, Rugs & Furniture in Palm Beach County

Nationwide Carpet, Upholstery & Tile Cleaning · Palm Beach County, FL

When a storm heads toward Palm Beach County, most people board the windows, fill the gas tank and stock up on water. Almost nobody thinks about the carpet, the area rugs or the sofa. That's where storm damage tends to stay the longest.

The damage usually doesn't come from a dramatic flood. It comes from three ordinary things:

By the time the power comes back, the house smells musty and nobody can say exactly why. Here's how to prevent that, and what to do if it happens anyway.

Before the Storm: What to Do With Your Floors and Furniture

  1. Get carpets and rugs cleaned early, not the week before landfall. Dirty carpet holds more moisture and starts to smell faster when it gets damp, because soil and body oils give mold something to feed on. Schedule carpet cleaning while the forecast is clear so everything has time to dry fully under normal A/C. Hurricane season runs through November 30, so there's still time this year.
  2. Roll up area rugs near doors and sliders. Get them off the floor and onto a bed, table or upper shelf. Clean them before you store them. A dirty rug rolled up in a hot, closed-up house is one of the most common ways mold gets started. Our indoor and outdoor rug cleaning guide covers which rugs handle moisture well and which don't.
  3. Move upholstered furniture away from exterior doors. Pull sofas and chairs toward the center of the room. Set wooden legs on foil squares or plastic blocks so wet carpet doesn't wick into the frame or stain the fabric.
  4. Seal your grout. Unsealed grout soaks up water, and dirt goes in with it. After a storm, that shows up as dark, blotchy grout lines that mopping won't fix. Sealing ahead of time keeps water and debris on the surface where you can wipe them off. See our tile and grout cleaning service.
  5. Pack the thresholds. Roll towels along the bottom of exterior doors and in the tracks of sliding glass doors. It costs nothing and stops a lot of wind-driven rain.
  6. Photograph everything. Take quick photos of your carpet, rugs and furniture before the storm. If you need to file an insurance claim later, before-photos make it much easier.

After the Storm: What You Can Save and What You Can't

Rainwater under a door or a small leak: This is usually clean water. If it's extracted and dried within 24 to 48 hours, carpet and pad can typically be saved. Get the A/C running as soon as power returns and keep fans moving air. If the area still feels damp or starts to smell, have it professionally extracted. Towels and box fans can't pull water out of the padding.

Rising floodwater or storm surge: This is a different situation. Floodwater carries sewage, chemicals and debris, and the carpet pad underneath generally can't be saved. Call your insurance company and a water restoration company first. Once the home is dried out, cleaning is the next step for the rugs, furniture and flooring that survived.

Musty smell with no visible water: Often this is just days of high humidity with the A/C off. Running the A/C helps, but if the smell is still there after a few days, it's coming from inside the carpet, cushions or mattress, and it needs a deep cleaning to remove it.

Muddy traffic lanes and stained grout: These are normal after a week of cleanup. They come out with proper hot water extraction and grout cleaning, and the sooner you treat them, the better they come out.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I schedule carpet cleaning before a hurricane?

As early in the season as you can, while the weather is clear. Your carpet needs time to dry completely with the A/C running, so don't wait until a storm is in the forecast.

Can wet carpet be saved after a hurricane?

If the water was clean rainwater and it's extracted within 24 to 48 hours, usually yes. If it was rising floodwater or storm surge, the pad should be replaced. Contact your insurance company and a water restoration company first.

Should I roll up my area rugs before a storm?

Yes, especially rugs near doors and sliders. Clean them first, though. A dirty rug stored in a hot, closed-up house can develop mold and odor.

How do I get rid of a musty smell after a power outage?

Get the A/C and fans running right away. If the smell is still there after a few days, it's coming from inside the carpet, padding, or upholstery, and a professional hot water extraction is the most reliable way to remove it.

Does sealing grout really help during hurricane season?

Yes. Sealed grout keeps water and dirt on the surface, so storm debris and muddy foot traffic don't soak in and permanently darken your grout lines.
